August Charitable Organization of the Month

The Extreme Surveillance charitable organization for August is BestFriends.org. Best Friends is working with humane groups all across the country to bring about a time when there are No More Homeless Pets. The sanctuary, at the heart of Southern Utah's Golden Circle of national parks, is home, on any given day, to about 1,500 dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, birds and other animals.

Best Friends manages a model No More Homeless Pets campaign with shelters and humane groups to ensure that every healthy dog or cat that's ever born can be guaranteed a loving home. And Best Friends reaches across the nation, helping humane groups, individual people, and entire communities to set up spay/neuter, shelter, foster, and adoption programs in their own neighborhoods, cities, and states.

The mission of Best Friends is driven by the simple philosophy that kindness to animals helps build a better world for all of us. And the work of Best Friends is supported entirely through the donations. Through the generous hearts and hands of people they can ensure that animals who come into the care of Best Friends will never again be alone, hungry, sick, afraid, or in pain. For more information please feel free to visit www.BestFriends.org.

Petsmart Petition

As an active supporter of many local and national animal rescue groups we find PetSmart's recent decision to sell rabbits in their stores, as a severe blow to the rescue and humane "no-kill" communities.

After years of supporting and inviting pet rescue organizations to set up adoption satellites in their stores, Petsmart has made the choice to sell house rabbits. This is an obvious dilemma for rescue and humane organizations everywhere. Rabbits are the third most euthanized pet in shelters. Extreme Surveillance joins Best Friends and other animal rescues committed to the "no-kill" movement by asking for your support. Ask PetSmart to do the right thing for all homeless animals by only allowing adoptions of homeless rabbits in PetSmart stores.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!

Sign the petition and help reach the goal of 30,000 signatures asking PetSmart's President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Robert Moran to reconsider this decision. Also, please encourage friends and family to sign our petition and stop this form of consumerism by NOT buying bunnies at PetSmart.

July Charitable Organization of the Month

Our July charitable organization of the month is Packages From Home. The mission of Packages From Home is to provide food, personal care and recreation items to our Troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, etc. Packages From Home is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization formed for the sole purpose of providing these items at no cost to the troops.

Packages from Home began as a mother's labor of love for her son, a soldier with the Army's 1st Infantry Division. Kathleen Lewis's son Christian was deployed to Iraq in March 2004. She began sending care packages to her son on a regular basis. She received a phone call from Christian and was thanked for all the comfort items from home, but she also found out that her son was the only soldier in his squad receiving any packages from home. Kathleen and some friends decided to adopt his squad, and began shipping packages to the men in his unit. This is the point where "Packages from Home" was born. Since March 2005 they have averaged shipping 1,000 to 1,500 packages a month to our heroes; their goal is to ship many more. They collect donated items from local patriotic citizins like non-perishable food and snacks, personal toiletries, and recreational items like games, books, music CDs and movie DVDs. The boxes are sealed by a Packages From Home director and mailed to U.S. servicemen and servicewomen who are deployed overseas in harm's way.

For more information please feel free to visit www.packagesfromhome.org. Extreme Surveillance is an official drop-off location for donated items.
